Abel Prize celebrations in Oslo

Karen Uhlenbeck received the Abel Prize from H.M. King Harald V

His Majesty King Harald V presented the 2019 Abel Prize to Karen Uhlenbeck at an award ceremony in the University Aula in Oslo on the 21st of May. Uhlenbeck is "Professor Emerita of Mathematics and Sid W. Richardson Regents Chair at the University of Texas at Austin" and "Visitor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study".

It has become a tradition that the Abel celebrations start with the laureate laying down a wreath at the Abel monument the day before the award ceremony. The monument was created by Gustav Vigeland, the Norwegian sculptor who is known worldwide for the Vigeland Park in Oslo.

Before the award ceremony Karen Uhlenbeck was received in audience at the Royal Palace by H.M. King Harald V. 

The Academy's Secretary General, Øystein Hov, accompanied Karen Uhlenbeck to the award ceremony in the University Aula. Hans Petter Graver, President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, gave the opening speech. Then the chair of the Abel Committee, Hans Munthe-Kaas, presented the reasons for the awarding of the prize. He then asked His Majesty King Harald V to come forward to present the Abel Prize for 2019 to Karen Uhlenbeck.

Artistic performances by the Norwegian Soloists' Choir and Camilla Spidsøe from the Norwegian National Ballet performed.

After the award ceremony there was a reception at a nearby theatre, Det Norske Teatret, where Karen Uhlenbeck was interviewed by Dutch mathematician and science communicator Ionica Smeets. The general public knows her for her popular science columns, blogs, books and television work. She has also written several books on science communication.

In the evening the Norwegian government hosted a banquet in honour of the Abel Laureate at Akershus Castle. H.M. King Harad V attended the Abel Prize banquet.

Carlos E. Kenig, President of International Mathematical Union, and Iselin Nybø, Minister of Research and Higher Education, spoke.
